On Saturday 28th February 30 pupils from Queen Margaret Academy and Ayr Academy boarded the bus to make the long awaited trip to Newcastle. There was a lot of excitement on the way down (and that was just from the teachers!) with an English Premier League football match and a session at Newcastle United’s training ground to come. Once we got to Newcastle we stood and saw some players coming into the stadium in their BMW’s, Audis and Mercs! We were then taken into the stadium through a special entrance and were given out lunch while watching some football on the TV. When we were there we were told that someone from our party was going to be allowed to be a ball boy for the day! Mr Dewar and Mr Mallon picked a permission slip at random from the pile and the lucky ball boy for the day was Euan Ramsay. He was then whisked away and given a Newcastle United tracksuit to wear and was even able to see all the players before the game.
We were all then taken to our seats in time to see the end of the warm up. We had a great view and after a cagey start the game came alive with a couple of goalmouth incidents. Newcastle then broke the deadlock with a strike by Cisse. He started to run over towards where Euan was sitting at the corner flag to celebrate which was very exciting! The game finished 1-0 to Newcastle so everyone was in high spirits leaving the stadium. Next stop was Newcastle United’s training ground.
Once we got there everyone got changed quickly and went onto the indoor 3G pitch to kick the ball about before the session started. Everyone was very well behaved and gave 100% effort during this session. The coaches said they were very impressed with the standard of football. After an hour and a half’s training (which flew in!) it was time to get changed, get a few photos taken in the press room and then back on the bus for the journey home.
A big well done to everyone for the way they conducted themselves throughout the whole day. Also a big thank you to Mr Oates at Ayr Academy for organising the main body of the trip. Everyone had a great time and we are hoping to get another trip in the not too distant future
